O Spotify is primarily known as a music streaming service, but nevertheless, the Swedish company has sought to strengthen its position by betting on other types of content – namely podcasts.
Now the Spotify has also decided to bet on “audiobooks” – books in audio form that can be enjoyed at any time by users of the service. For this launch, Spotify has added more than 300,000 books in audio form to its platform.
As with music and podcasts on Spotify, these “audiobooks” will be recommended on the service’s main page. When you find an ‘audiobook’ you are interested in, you can decide to buy it and the transaction will take place on an external page of the browser.
Spotify adds that this is the “first iteration” of the “audiobook” format on the platform, saying it intends to “innovate the format” over the next few years.
Note, however, that “Audiobooks” are still only available in the US and in English. Hopefully Spotify will expand this format to more territories eventually.
