THE BALL – Surprise at the US Open: the world number one falls (Tennis)

Russian Daniil Medvedev, current leader of the world ranking, was eliminated last night in the round of 16 of the US Open, when he was beaten by Australian Nick Kyrgios (25th in the world), in four ‘sets’, by the partial 6-7 (13/11), 6-3, 3-6 and 2-6, in a match that lasted nearly three hours.

Kyrgios reaches the quarter-finals of the American major for the first time, where he will face another Russian, Karen Khachanov (31st).

With this defeat, it is certain that Medvedev will lose the status of world number one in favor of Rafael Nadal (3rd), Carlos Alcaraz (4th) or Casper Ruud (5th).
