LE BAL – “I know people want a show, but I don’t want it anymore. I want to win without exhausting myself” (Judo)

Jorge Fonseca won the European Judo Cup in the +100kg category this Sunday in Coimbra.

“I got a little tired because of the competition, the desire to win… a bit of everything. Yes, it was only three fights, but against opponents of a hundred kilos when I was very light. This victory made me feel good. Frankly, I didn’t even expect that to happen because it’s in a different category than mine. I felt a bit like a fish out of water, but I was also convinced that I could beat anyone,” Jorge Fonseca (+100kg) told A BOLA after snatching gold last day by beating China’s Yongije in the final Yin for punishment when he was already leading by wazari – “I think it was ippon” – 1.28m from the end.

In preparation for the World Cup in Tashkent, between October 6 and 13, the double world champion and bronze medalist at the Tokyo Games in -100 kg played in the above category in order to avoid attrition of weight loss.

“The objective was to manage the fights. Learning what I’m not doing at -100 kg: reducing the number of attacks and knowing how to control the fight. I usually do a lot of attacks and end up getting tired a lot. This time, as it was against heavier opponents, it was not a question of attacking a lot, but of managing the whole of the fight, ”added the Sporting judoka.

“It ended up being kind of a practice for the world championship. I liked how I fought. I know people want it to be the base of the series, but I’m at a point in my career where I don’t want this anymore. I want to win, but calmly, without getting tired and wasting time with some nonsense things. To get gold, it is not always necessary that this either by ippon. I can also do it for the punishment. This is the job I have to do from now on,” said Fonseca, who before the Worlds will go to the European Open in Riccione (Italy), but already at -100 kg.
