The story of The Last of Us is told from the perspective of Joel, played by Troy Baker. When the Cordyceps outbreak happened, Joel was celebrating his birthday with his daughter and saw his life turned upside down. At first both fled alongside their brother Tommy, but they were involved in a shootout and their daughter was fatally injured, dying in his arms.
Since then, Joel has done what it takes to survive. Mentally and physically unshakeable, he becomes a smuggler in Boston’s quarantine zone and is tasked with transporting a young girl to the Fireflies.
Played by Hana Hayes, Joel’s daughter is only 12 years old and the first playable character in The Last of Us. She presents her father with a watch for her birthday, which is lovingly kept by Joel throughout the series. story.
Joel’s younger brother, who helped father and daughter escape after the initial Cordyceps outbreak and killed the soldier responsible for Sarah’s death. Played by Jeffrey Pierce in The Last of Us, Tommy survived alongside his brother until he joined the Fireflies.
But he soon became disillusioned with the group, abandoning it and building a settlement near a hydroelectric plant in Wyoming with the help of his wife, Maria.

Played by Ashley Johnson, Ellie is placed in Joel’s care after surviving a bite from an Infected and discovering that she is immune to the fungus. Initially, the two protagonists do not get along very well, but little by little they build an almost paternal relationship.
Ellie is delivered to the Fireflies, but Joel discovers that she has a Cordyceps mutation growing in her brain. Knowing the risks for the young woman, Joel makes a decision that will forever mark his relationship with Ellie.
Leader of the Fireflies, a revolutionary group and in-game antagonist, Marlene is played by Merle Dandrige and was assigned by Ellie’s mother to care for her daughter, but did not meet her until years later. After being injured in Boston, Marlene offers a reward to Joel and Tess to get the young woman out of the quarantine zone.
Henry and Sam
Two brothers found by Joel and Ellie while trying to escape a hunting party in Pittsburgh. Henry, played by Brandon Scott, is a seasoned survivor, as is Joel, and the couples team up to find the Fireflies and strike up a beautiful friendship.
Sam, played by Nadji Jeter, gets bitten while on the run, tries to attack Ellie and begins one of the most intense sequences in The Last of Us series.
