The German League (DFL) published the financial report for the 2020/2021 season on Friday. First and second division clubs in Germany have lost more than €1 billion since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The drop in turnover at the end of the first two seasons impacted by Covid-19 exceeds one billion euros. The overall turnover of the two championships fell by more than 750 million euros compared to the last season before the pandemic: from 4.8 to 4.05 billion euros,” said the CEO of the League. German soccer player, Donata Hopfen, during the presentation of the said report.
The big drop is recorded in box office receipts, which fell by around 95%, from €650 million in 2018/2019 to just €35.5 million last season: “During the last two years, the pandemic has had a dramatic economic impact on the Bundesliga. Unfortunately, this also affects the current season, mainly because, again, the stands often had to remain empty. We are facing an unprecedented situation. »
When it comes to transfers, the report shows that German clubs have become less willing to make big investments, with the drop also being substantial, standing at €469m.
