A 9-1 rout against Finland sealed Portugal’s qualification for the European U-17 Championship, which runs from May 16 to June 1.
The U-17 National Team qualified for the European Championship in the category on Tuesday by beating Finland 9-1, in the last meeting of Group 8 of the Elite Tour which took place in Viseu.
Portugal only needed a draw and even started the game badly, losing after just two minutes to a goal by Finland’s Talvitie. The Portuguese response was overwhelming, with goals from Afonso Moreira (11′), João Gonçalves (13′), José Dinis Rodrigues (45+1′, 60′ and 65′), Rodrigo Ribeiro (72′, 80′ and 89′) and Diogo Monteiro (90+2′).
Portugal finished with nine points from three games, having beaten the Republic of Ireland 4-1) and Bulgaria (2-1).
The final phase of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship will take place in Israel from May 16 to June 1, with 16 teams. Portugal join Germany, Spain and France as group winners.
