THE BALL – João Almeida finishes Volta a Catalunya in third place (Cycling)

Despite losing his lead the day before, João Almeida (UAE) finished the Volta a Catalunya with the best result ever by a Portuguese cyclist, securing third place overall, 52 seconds behind the winner after finishing the 7th and last step.

The winner is Colombian Sergio Higuita (Bora) – who also wears the Youth jersey – ahead of Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos), who was 16 seconds behind. In Saturday’s stage there was an attack by Carapaz, who won the stage, and Higuita, who changed the classification and took the lead.

The last stage, a 138 kilometer circuit in Barcelona, ​​was won by Italian Andrea Bagioli (QuickStep), in a sprint finish.

Rui Costa (UAE) lost more than six minutes and finished 69th (up six places), while Ivo Oliveira (UAE) lost more than 11 minutes and finished 94th and last, with several retirements.
