THE BALL – Defoe announces the end of his career (England)

Striker Jermain Defoe announced on Thursday the end of his career, at the age of 39, with immediate effect.

“I made my professional debut at the age of 17, in 1999, and I think it’s the right time to finish. I had an incredible journey and met incredible people. Football will always be in my blood and it gives me great pride and satisfaction to look back and see the blessed career I had. Now I look forward to spending quality time with my friends and family before moving on to the next chapter of my career,” Defoe wrote on social media.

The England international has scored 305 goals in 764 games as a senior, including spells at West Ham, Totthenham, Portsmouth, Toronto, Sunderland, Bournemouth, Rangers and by January he had returned to Sunderland.
