THE BALL – “I was more nervous last year” (Sporting)

Seven matches from the end of the championship, Sporting follows FC Porto. The victory in Guimarães (3-1) left the lions three points behind the dragons and once again dreaming of the possibility of a second championship.

Asked about the title fight, Rúben Amorim assumed that it was not only in the hands of Sporting.

“Everyone at Sporting needs FC Porto to lose points and it’s not easy because we’re talking about a team that hasn’t lost yet. The team believes it’s possible, there’s still a lot of tough points. Now, as the end of the championship draws near, it seems like it’s all about who goes down first and how that will affect this dispute. We’re waiting for a fuse to grow bigger, but what we have to do is is to win our matches, because by winning we always have hope,” he explained during the press conference.

Finally, Rúben Amorim refused the responsibility of repeating last season’s feat.

“We have a much bigger responsibility than winning championships, which is winning every week. There are three historics in Portugal and only one will be champion. You have to win, be in the decisions, whether in the final of the League Cup, in the semi-finals of the Portuguese Cup or in the knockout stages of the Champions League. You have to be in the fight until the end,” he said.

Finally, he denied any nervousness on the part of the team.

“I felt the most nervous team last year, I was also more nervous last year. Now we are more mature, we play better and we control the game better. We are late and when we is late we have the pressure that the first to fall will solve a little. It’s living with this pressure”, he concluded.
