New York – Apple could announce a new low-cost version of the iPhone SE with 5G capabilities at an annual product launch event scheduled for today, analysts say.
The company is also expected to release a new version of the iPad Air and an updated version of the Mac Mini at the event.
CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino said Apple could appeal to more price-sensitive consumers if the value of the iPhone remains the same for the new version.
“The iPhone SE really serves a lot of first-time buyers in the iPhone ecosystem, which may be younger individuals,” Zino said.
The new phone is said to be the first update to the iPhone SE model in two years and is rumored to feature an improved camera and faster processor.
The United States, Japan and Western Europe have been key markets for iPhone SE sales in recent years, said IDC analyst Ryan Reith. Reith said these regions are likely to remain key markets following the early launch of the third-generation iPhone SE.
“Currently, in most countries around the world, this technology (5G) just isn’t good enough to create a unique and differentiated experience…the fact that the iPhone SE comes with 5G is yet another way of allow users to take advantage of 5G as this technology evolves. over the next two years,” said Runar Bjørhovde, research analyst at Canalys.
